What to find in and around Kojonup

About Kojonup:

Visit the Kojonup visitors centre for all the information you require on Kojonup.
Nestling in the rural heartland of the Great Southern region, historic Kojonup is more than just a gateway to the beautiful South West. Settled over one and a half centuries ago, the town still bears all the trademarks of a traditional country settlement, with its historic buildings.
Today Kojonup is a thriving country town, proud of its heritage but looking to the future. Located on the Albany Highway, running directly from Perth to the historic port of Albany, Kojonup is just a two hour drive from Perth, and a short 160km from Albany.

At the heart of Kojonup is the fresh water spring which first attracted Aborigines to the area for the freshwater and abundance of game. The name Kojonup has historical significance, referring to the "Kodja" or stone axe made by the Aborigines from the local stone (visit Kodja place web site). To discover more about local Indigenous heritage and culture, a visit to The Kodja Place is a must. Then came the European settlers to the town in 1837.
Overlooking the Spring is the old Military Barracks, constructed in 1845 and one of the oldest surviving military buildings in Western Australia.

Time your visit to coincide with the annual Wildflower Festival on the long weekend in September, and see Kojonup alive and awash in colourful wildflowers.

Take a guided walk out into the bush and enjoy traditional bush tucker. Indulge in some peaceful bird watching - you are bound to be rewarded by the sight of some rare, beautiful birds, including Rainbow Bee-eaters, Yellow Western Robin, Peregrine Falcons and Fan-tailed Cuckoos.

For wildlife lovers, a wide range of marsupials still live in the forest including kangaroos.

For those whose idea of relaxation is a tour of the bush on horseback, water skiing on Lake Towerrinning or a leisurely round of golf, Kojonup has it all to offer, but if spectator sports are more your scene, why not time your visit to coincide with the annual Wandecla Polo and Polocrosse tournament - the largest tournament of its kind in Australia - or the Australia Day Picnic Races.
